From cellist and composer Matt Magerkurth comes Amends, a debut album of pieces for solo cello. Recorded in Bixby, Oklahoma’s Closet Studios, the music on the album is composed in a system of “road maps” -- that is, the pieces take the shape of skeletal structures that are filled differently in different performances, thereby keeping each iteration semi-improvisatory. Part of the “mending” in this album is in its process; this album features complete takes of pieces that have been layered with effects by producer Scott Bell in order to give the album a huge dynamic range - from the smallest, most delicate sounds to huge, expansive textures.

Some of that range comes from Magerkurth’s textural approach to the cello, which is derived from time spent playing with many of Tulsa’s singer/songwriters and through a chronic injury to his right wrist. While not an obstacle to routine playing, this injury has changed his method of sound production to one that highlights the overtones of the instrument.

Amends releases June 25 on people | places | records. Amends was recorded at Closet Studios in Bixby, Oklahoma. It was mixed by Scott Bell and mastered by Chris Wylie at Buffalo Hide Mastering in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The album and its singles feature artwork and design by Kalyn Fay Barnoski.
